By now, you’ve surely heard about the horrible earthquake that devastated the tiny country of Haiti on Tuesday, January 12. The Haitian Red Cross estimates between 45,000 and 50,000 people have died in the 7.0 quake that hit just outside the capital of Port-au-Prince and millions more are homeless and/or injured.
We at AGTraveler are encouraged by the worldwide outpouring of support to this ravaged nation. Nevertheless, help cannot arrive quickly enough for these people, many of whom are without food and water. Fortunately, there is no shortage of organizations with which you can donate much-needed funds.
CNN has compiled a fabulous list of more than 40 relief organizations, http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/impact/, and categorizes them in terms of what aid they will provide in Haiti (food, medical care, shelter, water, etc.) The American Red Cross is one of the leaders in the outreach, having dedicated $10 million to provide food, water, medical treatment and other assistance. If you would like to help, visit www.redcross.org and make a donation with your credit card. The minimum amount is $10. You can also send a $10 donation by texting ‘Haiti’ to 90999.
For our international visitors, the International Committee of the Red Cross http://www.icrc.org/web/eng/siteeng0.nsf/html/helpicrc accepts donations in British Pounds, Euros, Swiss Francs and US dollars.
As smart goddesses, we encourage you to shop around for the program you believe in the most, both in mission and in integrity. We understand if you’re not sure how or if the money gets from you to the people who need it most, so check out those websites and don’t hesitate to e-mail or call for more information.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and all those helping with relief efforts. We urge all Anglophone Goddesses to help in whatever way you are able and to remember that we are all part of the same global community.
In the words of poet Michael Ellison: “It’s about one love, one blood and one common cause.”
